Take a look around you, where are you, what are you doing and above all – what are you feeling right now? Just observe, just perceive. Notice the room and yourself in it – with everything that is.
Feel into this moment for a minute or two…

The term Advent refers to ‚arrival‘ and, according to its root, also derives from words such as „ad venture“ or adventure. Adventure you may ask – what does Advent have to do with adventure? Life is an adventure, I tell you, even the greatest and most fascinating – always starting with the departure into the unknown, every day anew – the paths of which are completely untrodden and the destination often reveals itself differently than hoped for after a long journey through life. But doesn’t every adventurer have a goal, a motive in mind that they are striving for? Aren’t we looking for treasure on an adventure – isn’t that exactly what we wanted to find when we played as children?

Pause for a moment and take a closer look at the picture of the child with the shell. Feel into the scenery. Not with your mind, be open and just let the picture take effect. Isn’t there a great adventurer sitting there exploring something new and discovering a treasure?

Who is the bigger adventurer of the two of you? The child who turns to the shell with dedication and openness or you? Doesn’t the child find a treasure that is much greater than what we adults always strive for? Isn’t its joy and lightness palpable? Don’t his eyes sparkle with wonder? There is no goal here – just the moment. The child is certainly not thinking about opening a mussel farm, selling cultured pearls or starting a global business to earn a lot of money. If the child is concerned about anything at all, which I don’t believe, then it is about the wonderful feeling in the moment of making and discovering – experiencing the moment with all its senses. The shell on the outside is beautiful. It is apparently (for you) the treasure that is found. But in truth you discover, indeed you experience – if there is no intention – a much greater answer as a gift from life within you…

Advent is about arrival – more precisely, about your arrival in the here and now. It’s about your presence, your presence combined with a portion of mindfulness. The Advent season is a reminder of what is really important. 2,000 years ago, no one placed the infant Jesus in the manger and said that the Christ was there. Nobody had any expectations, nor was there any discussion about his future, his path through life, nor was his resurrection praised in advance. Everyone simply stood around this little being and rejoiced like mad…

Over the next few days, try to let go of your expectations, your set goals or dissolve them a little. Just let yourself fall back into the flow of life and drift playfully. Live and enjoy the coming moments, just like the child you once were and still are in your heart. I wish you a peaceful Advent season…
